In His infinite wisdom, our God created time. He wanted to provide His children with a measuring tool. With it, we measure distances. It allows us to plan for the future and learn from the past. Farmers look to the seasons in order to prepare their fields. There is a rhythm to our existence while we are on earth.
Time as short as a millisecond can be measured, as well as hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades and so on. The ability to measure our progress over a period of time can be motivating and encouraging, or a source of discouragement. Either way, time serves a useful purpose.
We are told that there is an appointed time for every purpose under heaven. This means each of us not only has a timeline for our lives, but on our timeline there are events God has purposed and planned for us to accomplish. God designed and ordained the timing, so it can be trusted.
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NKJV)
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NKJV)
It is the fool who tries to accomplish some purpose before God’s appointed time. Patience is not easy for many of us. It requires self-control and a faith in the promises of God.
Recall the story of Abraham and Sarah. They took matters into their own hands regarding their promised birthright. As a result of their impatience, a child was born who birthed a nation whose conflict is evident now, in our present days. “Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” Genesis 18:14 (NIV)
Nothing is impossible with God! We cannot rush the hands of time and that is where Abraham and Sarah made their mistake. They should have set aside their concerns of old age and trusted in God’s promise to give them a son. The Lord likes to wait for circumstances to look hopeless. This is when He will work so no body will question that it was He who managed the miracle. Just think about the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead!
Patience can only be mastered if we are walking in righteousness. God makes everything beautiful in HIS time, not our time. God planed each event in our lives. His purposes are never thwarted, even when we act out in disobedience.
God lovingly prepares His children for service. It takes time to train a soldier for battle and our Commander does not want casualties! He believes in building up our spiritual muscles. Exercising our faith is one way to do this and it usually means a hardship of some sort.
Once the appointed time has arrived and we are ready to fulfill God’s plan or purpose, the event will present itself. We don’t have to go off looking for it. Because we have patiently waited with an expectant heart, we will recognize what needs to be done. Victory will be ours. Again, each event has an appointed time. It is simply our job to wait for the Commander to send us on our mission.
“Because for every matter there is a time and judgment, though the misery of man increases greatly.” Ecclesiastes 8:6 (NKJV)
“For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.” Habakkuk 2:3 (NKJV)
